Ruffled Red
Ask a group of people what their favorite bird is, and most likely someone will say the Cardinal. or
the "Red Bird." The red bird is a combination of color, song, and a friendly character. It is said that the
Cardinals were named after the Cardinals of the Catholic church who wear red robes. Cardinals are
commonly seen in backyards in the eastern half of the United States. West Virginia, along with six other
states has adopted the Northern Cardinal as their state bird.
The male's bright red plumage is matched by the clarity of his calls. The male has a black patch
around his beak, and a tufted crest. Even the female, whose plumage is a darker brown, is an
accomplished singer. They both sing all year long, brightening dreary winter days.
Cardinals mate for life. If you see one, the other won't be far away. They prefer dense areas, such as a
thicket, or thickly branched tree to make their nest of twigs and grass. They raise their broods together,
and while Dad is teaching one brood to fly, Mom may begin a second. Often while feeding they will offer
each other a seed, and you will see their beaks touch briefly. It almost seems that they are gazing
longingly into each other's eyes.
