Just Another Pretty Face
Just Another Pretty Face

My dad passed away the end of December 1998. In the spring of 1999 a strange bird showed up in
our neighborhood. He spent the first week after his arrival just scouting the neighborhood until
eventually he wound up in my mother’s driveway. He behaved as though he had just returned from a
long vacation! He flew into our yards like some weird sounding UFO and took over “Musick Mountain” as
though he owned it! I finally identified him as a Guinea, but we named him “Turk”, because it seemed
everyone’s first inclination was to call him a turkey. Turk wound up spending just over seven years with
us, astounding some, and annoying others. He met an untimely death on a snowy March morning in
2007 after being attacked by a large dog.
Mom was certain that after Dad’s passing he instructed that bird to come to her house as a sign that
all was well with him…and to just keep an eye on things. My mother and sister made sure that all the
comforts that a free-ranging Guinea could want were made available. A barrel with straw was his shelter,
and a large mirror at the base of a shrub because he loved to see his reflection. I don’t know if Turk
enjoyed looking at himself as he is doing in the hubcap of the old car in the picture, or if he was just
lonely for another bird that looked like him. Turk wasn’t “Just Another Pretty Face” though. He captured
the hearts and the love of our family; and dad, I want to let you know… if you did send him, he did his
job! I know that everytime I heard his ratcheting voice, or saw him strutting through my yard; my
thoughts went instantly to you!
The old chicken coops in my painting are the remnants of our farming experiences. The little building
in the foreground was dad’s last project. His love and joy was his garden and his chickens. Though he
hadn’t owned chickens for several years he wanted to build one more chicken coop while he had the
strength. I helped him to gather all the scrap materials we could find, and completing that building was
the last physical work he was able to do. The old car represents my passion for antique automobiles in
any state of repair. Since my early teen years until today, I have always had an old car somewhere on
the property, and big dreams about its restoration.
